Img.259 (#H3): "Jackfruit" fruits locally called "nangka" are very similar to "chempedak" fruits. (Click here to see what a "jackfruit" fruit looks like.) However, they are less tasty than them, although cheaper and more common. In Malaysia, you can buy them practically everywhere, i.e. in markets, supermarkets, and already fried at roadside stalls. The flesh of "jackfruit" is orange (while that of "chempedak" is brownish).

The "nangka" or "jackfruit" fruits have an average taste, although quite pleasant, and I personally enjoy eating them. However, they taste quite different from "chempedak" (i.e. incomparably less interesting). Their feature is also that they are very hard to digest, while after eating they linger in the stomach for days as if someone ate bricks. In Malaysia you can get them at practically any stall, so there is no difficulty in trying them. However, one must be careful to eat them immediately after taking them out of the cocoon, because then they spoil quickly - and for a European, eating such a spoiled-old fruit usually means food poisoning and the need to spend the rest of the vacation in the toilet (as I described in item #J1. of the website Tropical fruits).

Of the non-culinary properties of "nangka" or "jackfruit," the most noteworthy is their alleged ability to cure chronic cough.
